ROOTFULL

Rootfull is a material innovation company growing textile from grass root.

Nature has been weaving textile beneath our feet for more than 500 million years. And now, we have the power to harness those fibres and create something truly extraordinary.

Wheatgrass seed is cultivated in templates carved from beeswax. Over 12 days the shoots grow to 20cm while the roots bind below to form a naturally woven structure. The root weaves itself into fabric that is biodegradable, pollution-free, water-efficient and estimated carbon neutral. The entire process incorporates organic and locally sourced materials. Water is recycled from runoff, and any excess shoot or seed is repurposed as animal fodder, leaving no waste behind. At the core of the innovation is a simple, disruptive idea that root can be grown into functional materials and products to replace synthetic textile, leather and other petrochemical products.

Roots are the invisible building blocks for our natural world - the foundations for life. Harnessing this living material has physical and metaphorical implications that reach beyond the artefact itself. Rootfull strives to embody the dream of organic design to offer a vision of a world that is grown, not made. It inspires a deeper awareness of the materials we consume to deliver a narrative that can change behaviours.
